MA 4300 - Modern Algebra Prerequisite(s): MA 2150 . An introduction to the principles and concepts of modern abstract algebra. Topics will include groups, rings and fields, with applications to number theory, the theory of equations, geometry, cryptography and error-correcting codes. It attempts to understand the process of mathematical abstraction, the formulation of algebraic axiom systems and the development of an abstract theory from these axiom systems. An important objective of the course is mastery of the reasoning characteristic of abstract mathematics involving the reading and writing of mathematical proofs. Credit(s): 3 (3 plus 0)
