HUM 3200 - Philosophy of Technology Prerequisite(s): ENG 1270 . This course introduces students to the concept of technology as a philosophical discipline, and explores the role of technology in human culture. The differences between Epistémé and Techné are studied in detail. Various philosophers will be explored. Credit(s): 3 (3 plus 0)
Upon successful completion of this, course students will be able to:
- Differentiate the scientific method from others ways of understanding the natural world.
- Define and evaluate the ‘idea of nature’.
- Distinguish between techne and episteme.
- Compare and contrast three models of knowing: Classical, Positivist, and Feminist.
- Compare and contrast the three philosophical attitudes towards technology: ancient skepticism, enlightened optimism, and romantic uneasiness.
- Investigate and appraise a single philosopher of technology: Heidegger, Haraway, Foucault, Arendt, or Mumford.
