The Bachelor of Science in Biology is a combination of biology, chemistry, and physics that are augmented by scientific writing, leadership, communication, and professional development. These skills and disciplines are nested in an environment of inquiry-based learning starting in the very first course. This degree is also flexible with choice of upper-level electives for specialization or to prepare for professional programs, such as medical school, veterinary school, or dental school.
For professional school entrance, students are directed to take these courses as their upper level selections:
- BIO 2710, 2720, 2730, 2740 Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Lab (8 credits)
- BIO 2900 Cell Biology and BIO 2910 Cell Biology Lab (4 credits)
- BIO 3920 Molecular Biology and BIO 3920 Molecular Biology Lab (4 credits)
- BIO 4110 Biochemistry and BIO 4120 Biochemistry Lab (4 credits)
- BIO 4710 Immunology (3 credits)
- CH 2500 and 2510 Organic Chemistry II and Lab (4 credits)
- Choice of Physics Sequence: PH 1100 and 2100 Fundamentals of Physics I and II or PH 1300, 1310, 2300 and 2310 General Physics I and II and Labs (6-8 credits)
Among our Pharmaceutical Science Program, Environmental Science and Sustainability Program, and Forensic Science Program, there are several common themes and learning outcomes that can be synthesized into an umbrella set of learning outcomes for a Biology Program. These common outcomes emphasize core biological principles, critical thinking, research skills, communication, ethics, and real-world applications, which are fundamental across all the programs.
