Child Development, B.S.

This degree is appropriate for individuals wishing to work in childcare agencies and/or social services agencies that cater to the growth and development of children or students wishing to pursue graduate studies in psychology or education. Students will receive a grounding in psychology courses that will provide an understanding of theory and practices related to working with children and adolescents. They will also receive basic instruction in educational courses to provide them with an understanding of the psychosocial and physical development of children.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the fundamentals of providing emotional, psychological, academic and physical support to children and adolescents in an early education, child care, social service or mental health settings.

2. Describe theories and major concepts related to the development and or interventions with children and adolescents.

3. Demonstrate recognition of the importance of human diversity and multiculturalism important to successful interventions with children, adolescents and their care takers.

4. Evaluate scholarly and peer reviewed research relevant to issues impacting the success of children and adolescents.

5. Apply ethical behavior when interacting with child and adolescent clients or students and their caretakers.

6. Illustrate the competent use of interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others in a professional setting

7. Remember the appropriate application of psychological skills, knowledge and principles necessary for assisting children, adolescents and their caretakers in various academic, child care, social service and mental health settings.
