Medical Coding, Certificate

Medical Coders are a skilled subset of health information professionals who work to classify data from medical records using standardized coding classification systems. The coding practitioner will analyze patients’ records and assign alpha-numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure. 

The Medical Coding Certificate program will provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to become proficient in applying ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT/HCPCS codes to advanced medical cases.  

After completing the Medical Coding Certificate program, learners will be able to: 

  1. Analyze and interpret medical record documentation.

  2. Recognize medical terms associated with various body systems and diseases. 

  3. Accurately assign ICD-10-CM for diagnostic coding. 

  4. Accurately assign ICD-10-PCS codes to medical cases. 

  5. Accurately assign CPT codes for coding medical procedures. 

  6. Accurately assign national and local HCPCS codes and modifiers. 

  7. Complete basic billing functions to process insurance forms. 

  8. Identify the importance of upholding ethical medical billing and reimbursement practices. 

  9. Manage health information and records according to privacy policies. 

  10. Use effective and professional communication in the healthcare environment.
